STOP. REVIVE. SURVIVE the Newell

Last modified: December 4, 2006 - 2:52 PM

Yawning, Tired Eyes, Poor Concentration, Drowsiness, Restlessness ...
Please don’t ignore the early warning signs of driver fatigue because a microsleep can kill in seconds, and remember, drivers are particularly at risk on roads like the Newell Highway with its long open stretches.

Some tips to avoid Fatigue:

  • Start your trip after a good night sleep (7 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep).
  • Plan not to travel for more then 8-10 hours in any one day. The longer you drive the more fatigued you will become.
  • Plan to take regular breaks on long journeys.
  • Share the driving.
  • Do not drive at times when you would normally be asleep.
  • Pull over and stop if drowsiness, discomfort or loss of concentration occur.

A good night’s sleep will help reduce driver fatigue.  The average person requires about 8 hours of sleep each night to function effectively.  When we reduce the number of hours we sleep we accumulate a “sleep debt”, which increases our tendency to fall asleep the next day.
The only way to reduce sleep debt is SLEEP.

STOP. REVIVE. SURVIVE.

These Councils wish you a safe trip along the Newell Highway; Bland, Gilgandra, Narrandera, Jerilderie, Warrumbungle, Narromine, Forbes, Moree Plains and Parkes Shire Councils.
