Elvis really is alive in Parkes after bringing home yet another award for the CountryLink Parkes Elvis Festival. At a stunning awards ceremony and gala dinner at Star City, Sydney the 2008 NSW Tourism Award winners were announced - with the CountryLink Parkes Elvis Festival taking out the Gold Award title in the Festivals and Events category.

Over 800 leaders and sponsors in the Tourism Industry joined Jodi McKay, Minister for Tourism, at the evening that was hosted by Tourism NSW and the Tourism Industry Council NSW.

Parkes Shire Tourism Manager Kelly Hendry said that "the NSW Tourism Awards are held annually to celebrate and acknowledge tourism businesses that have demonstrated outstanding achievement and success throughout the year. The Awards are a submission and inspection-based competition and provide the opportunity to publicly recognise and showcase the State's finest tourism operators".

The NSW Tourism Awards aim to:
• encourage and celebrate creativity, professionalism and innovation
• provide a benchmark for best practice within the tourism industry
• promote business planning amongst NSW tourism operators
• publicly recognise and reward excellence through an annual celebration
• reinforce the value of the tourism industry
• provide an opportunity for successful entrants to progress to the Australian Tourism Awards.
The Festivals and Events category was open to festivals or events that a) create substantial economic impact within the local community, b) attract visitors from intrastate and/or interstate, c) generate regional media profile, and d) positively promote the destination. They could be one-off or recurring. Other finalists that the Elvis Festival beat in this category included:

• Myall River Festival, Mid North Coast
• NSW Caravan, Camping, 4WD & Holiday Supershow, Sydney
• Temora Aviation Museum Flying Days, Riverina (who were awarded a Silver award)
• The Bitter & Twisted International Boutique Beer Festival, Hunter (who were awarded a Bronze award)

"Winning this prestigious award is a fantastic achievement - its really going to raise the profile of the Festival and Parkes. The organising Committee, Council and public put many hours of hard work into the Festival every year and this prestigious award recognises everyone's dedication." Said Ellie Ruffoni, Elvis Festival Coordinator.
